I embarked on the "Volt Grid" project as a self-initiated case study, aiming to update my skills in visual and product design. Having spent the last four years in a design management role, I felt the urge to delve back into hands-on design work. I find almost a meditative joy in conceptualizing products from scratch.

Volt Grid was conceived as an app for the sustainable energy world, focusing on smart grids and solar power. Through this initiative, I also aimed to highlight how design can seamlessly connect innovative tech with meaningful value for individuals, businesses, and our planet.

Concept

Smart Grids

Smart grids represent the next generation of electricity networks, designed to optimize the production, distribution, and consumption of electricity. They incorporate renewable energy sources, like solar power, and use advanced technologies to create more efficient and sustainable electricity systems. It plays a pivotal role in reducing carbon footprints, promoting energy efficiency, and fostering sustainable community development, which is very much aligned with ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) initiatives.

Ecossystem

The Volt Grid concept was envisioned as a comprehensive ecosystem where users have everything they need concerning electricity for their homes or businesses. Starting from the sale and installation of solar energy capture infrastructure, it extends to home automation, providing users with a detailed analysis of the data generated within their home's system. With the aid of AI, users are granted holistic insights into their energy consumption habits, guiding them on how to be more energy-efficient.

 

The system intelligently determines the optimal moments to sell stored energy, maximizing financial benefits for the user. Moreover, the integration with an online store ensures that users are always informed about the health of their equipment, from maintenance needs to potential upgrades, such as enhancing their home's energy storage capacity.

 

At its core, Volt Grid's mission is to champion sustainability and smart energy management. By offering users a 360-degree view and control over their energy habits, the aim is to foster energy conservation, promote the adoption of renewable energy, and ensure users are always equipped with the best tools for their energy needs.

I had fun combining 3 things I enjoy a lot: creativity, innovation and design.

Volt Grid provides users with a real-time snapshot of their energy consumption, highlighting the household devices consuming the most energy.

Real-time Monitoring

Users can decide to either store or sell their excess energy. Leveraging AI, the app recommends optimal selling times based on prevailing grid demand.

Energy Management

Drawing from individual consumption behaviors, the app dispenses personalized energy-saving advice.

Tailored Tips & Insights

Volt Grid seamlessly syncs with various household devices, from electric cars to lighting setups, offering an in-depth view of energy consumption.

Device Integration

A cornerstone of my design philosophy for this project was ensuring an intuitive user experience, characterized by clear CTAs and easily digestible information.
